To ensure your gear actually works when you need it—and to keep your business compliant with New Zealand regulations—you must follow a strict inspection schedule. Here is what the NZ standards require.
The Legal Framework: NZS 4503
In New Zealand, the maintenance and testing of portable fire extinguishers and hose reels are governed by the NZS 4503 standard. Adhering to this standard satisfies your obligations under the Health and Safety at Work Act and ensures your building’s annual Building Warrant of Fitness (BWOF) remains valid.
The standard breaks down testing into three main intervals: monthly, twelve-monthly (annual), and five-yearly.
1. Monthly Inspections (The Quick Check)
NZS 4503 states that fire extinguishers should be inspected at regular monthly intervals. While this can be managed internally by a designated fire warden, many businesses hand this off to their safety partner to ensure nothing is missed.
During a monthly check, we verify that:
Every extinguisher is in its designated location and completely unobstructed.
The pressure gauge needle is resting firmly in the green zone.
The safety pin and plastic tamper seal are intact.
The discharge nozzle or hose is free from blockages or spider webs.
2. 12-Monthly Inspections (The Annual Service)
Once a year, a thorough, documented service must be carried out by a qualified technician. This is a much deeper technical dive than the monthly visual check.
For extinguishers, the technician will weigh the unit to check for hidden gas loss, inspect the physical integrity of the cylinder for corrosion, and check the condition of all internal valves and seals. For fire hose reels, the annual test involves fully running out the hose, pressurising the line to check for leaks, and ensuring the water flow rate meets regulatory requirements.
3. 5-Yearly Servicing (The Deep Hydrostatic Test)
Every five years, fire extinguishers require an advanced overhaul. Over time, the constant internal pressure can fatigue the metal cylinder.
During the five-year service, the extinguisher is completely emptied and subjected to a hydrostatic pressure test to ensure the cylinder can still safely handle the pressure load. The internal chemical or gas is replenished, and critical valve components are replaced.
