RCD Testing: What Are Residual Current Devices and Why Do They Matter?

When it comes to workplace electrical safety, regular appliances like computers and kettles get a lot of attention. However, there is a silent guardian built into many modern electrical setups that provides the ultimate defense against severe electric shocks: the Residual Current Device (RCD).

While a standard circuit breaker or fuse is designed to protect your building’s wiring from overloading and catching fire, an RCD is explicitly designed to protect human life. Here is what you need to know about how they work and why testing them is a strict legal requirement in New Zealand.

What is an RCD and How Does It Work?

An RCD is an electrical safety device that constantly monitors the balance of electric current flowing through a circuit. Under normal operating conditions, the current flowing into an appliance through the live wire should exactly match the current returning through the neutral wire.

If an electrical fault occurs—such as a frayed cord exposing a wire, or water leaking into a power tool—some of that current can escape, potentially passing through a human body to the ground.

The moment the RCD detects even a tiny discrepancy in the current balance (often as small as 30 milliamperes), it trips instantly. It cuts off the electricity supply in a fraction of a second (usually under 40 milliseconds), stopping a fatal electrocution before it can occur.

The Different Types of RCDs

In your business layout, you will generally encounter three main variations of RCD protection:

Switchboard RCDs: Built directly into your main electrical service panel, protecting all power outlets tied to that specific circuit.

Socket-Outlet RCDs: Built permanently into individual wall outlets, commonly found in high-risk areas like commercial kitchens, bathrooms, or workshops.

Portable RCDs: Attached to extension leads or built into heavy-duty power boards, vital for trade sites where tools are plugged into unknown, unmonitored power sources.

Why Routine RCD Testing is Mandatory

Because RCDs rely on delicate internal mechanical components to snap open and cut power instantly, they can degrade over time. Dust, moisture, and lack of movement can cause the internal mechanisms to stick, rendering them completely useless in a real emergency.

Under safety standard AS/NZS 3760, RCDs must be regularly tested by a certified technician using specialized diagnostic equipment.
